Creativity is a Continuous Rising Spiral of Life

Creativity is a continuous rising spiral since we never stop learning, growing, and evolving. First, we start with beginners mind. We are ignited by an idea, a call, that moves us into action. We gather, explore, and lay a plan to move forward in the hope of creating something wonderful.

Doing Art, manifesting our inspired hazy dream, takes us into a new land. We’ve never tried this before. It’s unknown territory. Some risks have to be made. It’s exciting, scary, and mysterious. Are we up to this? What have people done before us? We have to gather our courage, commit to keep going, and see where it takes us. The art starts to take on a life of its own.

I’m on the next thrilling part of the spiral where experimentation is happening. The above painting is one color mixing painting, unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I have to stop, take a step away, and look at my art in the days to come. I don’t want to overwork a piece. Are the colors balanced and the marks varied? Does it work as a finished piece?

And so the spiral of creation, just as the spiral of life, carries us along. As we let go of what doesn’t work, or the old comfy habits we’ve always done, we find ourselves in the amazing place of discovery. We start to see a path to follow where we create more new art that we love. It’s a wondrous cycle where we gain knowledge, experience, and never look back.

Eventually, with purpose, we follow through to the end. This is a time to grasp what gift the process has given us. Our story reveals itself and something shifts deep within us. We are never quite the same. We have a deeper confidence, more knowledge of our craft, and new ideas to pursue.

Then, with a bit more clarity, we return to the endless continuing rising spiral with beginners mind again. Moving forward, we find our next new adventure. Art and life carry us in Flow.
