Valley of the Moon, A discovery painting

Two Winning Combinations for Art and Life can easily be followed in all you do. I discovered that consciously doing these 2 things, made art making more fun, and life more interesting.

First of all, when starting something new, go with what you ‘know’. You are filled with life experiences that can relate to your path today. I did that with the painting above.

The sky came first. Although I thought it would be a light turquoise, once I started painting, the body’s intuition took over. My hand gravitated to the colors, tools, and effects that worked for me today. Feelings opened me to all I needed.

This is listening at the deepest level. I allowed the inner voice to just do its thing. The result was a successful beginning that encouraged my moving forward. What can you do today that assures you ‘success’?

If you feel stuck and aren’t sure of a direction, always go to something that comes easiest for you, is doable, and will give you a winning feeling inside. Plus, this gets the energy and imagination moving.

Two winning combinations for art and life also hold surprises.

Secondly, try something new, unexpected, or different. I call this one the learning to fly path.

Two finches have been nursing a tiny nest hidden deep within a large wreath outside our front door. I’ve decorated the huge grapevine wreath with feathers, dreamcatchers, beads, and pine cones over the seasons. Now the excitement has grown, and it’s time for the single hatchling to fly.

The parents hop from twig to twig, and fly from bush to tree in an ongoing example of how to fly. The Learning to Fly path is new to the fledgling. It definitely is a risky choice.

Plus, it is filled with unknowns. Am I ready for this? Can I trust myself enough to take a chance? Do I want to leave the security of the nest I’ve known and loved? The bigger the risk, the larger the gain.

As a result, trying something new is exciting, thrilling, scary, and yet holds such possibilities. And let me add, that in the recent past, I have tried new techniques a little too ‘ruthlessly’ and received a tear in my rotator cuff that today, I’m still strengthening with physical therapy. So I know I tend to overdo new things.

But gently moving in the direction of creating happy accidents can be such fun! That is the valley part of the painting. First charcoal marks, then watercolor crayons, and paint, sprayed with water to create textures, flow, and unexpected blendings.

Things started to appear, and I added more layers, keeping what I liked and painting over what I didn’t. The result is a painting that reflects me in this moment of time.

Isn’t this a lot like life? Creating more of what we love and letting go of all the things we don’t, leads to a much happier life. Following our good feelings creates more of the good.
