‘If You have built Castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.’ Henry David Thoreau
This thought just holds me & won’t let go! To me, this is all about starting with your Heart’s Desire every time. You must begin with what you love, your passion, your Biggest Dreams. From there, it’s all a matter of figuring out how to get it out to the world. How does your dream become your reality?
In many cases, it’s putting many old ways, the things we may love to do but that just don’t work anymore, on a passing ship and saying ‘Farewell’. Old ways are limiting in this age of internet and social media. I can teach a class to maybe 10 in in my neighborhood, but if I offer it online, I reach the world. The same is true if I sell my art locally at a fair. The interactions are different, certainly, as well as the physical energy required for each, and ideally I would do both. The truth is many more people are buying everything from high quality antiques and original art & prints, to rare books online these days. Who would have predicted this even 10 years ago?
Our good philosopher goes on to say, ‘…if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.’ I see this as really immersing and learning every possible venue, from creating your own online shop, to selling on Etsy or ebay, to sending out images on instagram/FB/Twitter, to making videos of you and your work, and still showing your work locally if you can, using every available means, to allow your audience to find you. But, you must Do this while living as though you are already the successful artist, the famous writer, the incredible dancer/actor/musician of your dreams. In other words, Live the dream today, and every day.
The biggest consideration is what is YOUR Way? Ask your heart to show you a direction right for you. Consider your stamina, your effort, your capabilities, and ask yourself if you can create a business that sustains you and still work from home? Should you partner with another to share the load? Or do you aim for just a few really high end gatherings a year to present your talents? What works for you?
‘Once you set yourself in motion, the necessary resources will be drawn to you.’ Mike Dooley
So if you have built your Castle in the Sky, create a foundation to support it, protect it, and nurture it. And enjoy your life, your choices, your creativity, every single day. Here is another castle in the air thought to ponder.
