Arts and Crafts People are Great Problem Solvers!
“Research shows that the most accomplished scientists are likely to be craftspeople.” American Craft Magazine, Oct/Nov 2014. Many chose hobbies, and after work activities to recharge their energy far from their working think tanks. Some played musical instruments, others painted, sculpted, did woodworking, hands on ceramics or metalwork. They involved all their senses and their bodies, to move, experiment, and experience the pleasure of creativity. Technical scientists often leaned toward the fine arts and music, while inventors, patent makers, and leading entrepreneurs chose hand on crafts.
The type of thinking needed for each area often overlaps, with each involving certain knowledge about the materials, its possibilities and limitations. The magazine goes on to say the long held myth that a person becomes a master by working in one area for at least 15 years, goes by the wayside when the reality seen is that people often can master several technical areas all simultaneously. The same creative problem solving thinking works in multiple areas.
I’m keeping all this in mind as this week I begin an online painting faces and figures class with an instructor in Ireland, teach my own private jewelry class with a new student tomorrow, attend 2 webinars this week about working in social media and list building, add to my own online class offerings, AND start to play with bronze fastfire clay! Just take it all one step at a time, ignite the creative fires deep within, jump in and see what happens! Let the creativity begin, expand, and grow!!!
