We all need time away, Daydream time, whatever that means for you!
Setting time aside each week to just dream, is an important way to bring balance into your life. Daydreaming turns on certain neurological circuits that allow inspiration and intuition to ignite! It’s all personal, but often it’s just having a notebook handy while you pull out of the ordinary world, and navigate a different place out among nature. For many, that place is the beach, the ocean, or it may be hiking a trail, walking the neighborhood, swimming or floating along in the dazzling sun, something that takes your body out of ‘to do’ mode, and into another world.
New studies of how we each adapt to the world, show that creativity is personal, as is learning. Visual types learn best while doodling, sketching, taking photos, getting the hands moving in some creative endeavor. Bodily Kinesthetic types have been found to comprehend math and history by moving the body, chess style, on gameboards, and maps. Musical people ‘memorize’ to the beat of songs, symphonies, lyrics playing, repeated refrains, captured within the brain in a unique way, never to be forgotten. Each learns with the body, in the body, and is necessary for that type of person.
I get my inspiration in many ways. Sometimes it’s adding to a sketchbook while out on the deck. I love to read the latest discoveries in Time and Discover Magazines about science, time, and multiple universes. My favorite way has always been to explore an art institute, or art museum. It takes me back to the past in beautiful, creative ways that enrich and inspire me endlessly. Taking a new course sets me on an exploration where I really learn more about myself as I’m honing my skills. One of the best ways to learn anything, is to teach it, which I have done for most of my adult life. Each thing expands me, enables me to grow in a new direction. I don’t do the same thing in exactly the same way twice. I have to keep it fresh and new, for Me!
So find some introspective time for yourself. Put yourself first, as often as you can. You don’t need to haul off to a retreat, or go on a fast, float in an isolation tank, or quit your day job to find yourself. But DO plan on time for you! Put it on the calendar. It’s probably the most important appointment you will ever keep! And make it fun!
